Solar Water Heater in Rainy Season: Does It Work? Coimbatore Guide
Quick answer: Yes, a solar water heater still works in the rainy season. On cloudy days the evacuated tubes still collect diffused sunlight, so you usually get warm water, just not as hot as on a clear summer day. For long stretches of continuous rain, an electric backup element or a heat pump keeps hot water available every morning.
The northeast monsoon set in over Tamil Nadu in mid-October, and October has brought heavy spells to Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. This is exactly when we get the same question on the phone every day: “Sir, mazhai time-la solar heater work aagumaa?” Here is an honest answer from our team at Arun Hitech, a V-Guard Authorized Dealer serving Coimbatore and nearby towns since 2014, with photos from real installations we have done.

How a solar water heater works on cloudy and rainy days
A solar water heater does not need direct, harsh sunlight to work. It needs solar radiation, and part of that radiation reaches the roof even through clouds (called diffused light). In an ETC (evacuated tube collector) system like the V-Guard Tru-Hot Pro, each glass tube has a vacuum layer that traps heat and stops it escaping, which is why ETC models keep working reasonably well in cloudy and cool weather.
What changes in the rainy season is the amount of heat collected in a day:
Partly cloudy day: usually comfortably warm water for morning baths.
Fully overcast day: lukewarm water; the tank still holds whatever heat it collected.
Two or three days of continuous heavy rain: water may stay cool, and this is where a backup option helps.
The insulated tank also matters. Water heated in the afternoon stays hot overnight, so even after a rainy evening you often still have warm water the next morning.
ETC or FPC: which is better for the monsoon?
For homes in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Pollachi, an ETC model is usually our first suggestion because it handles cloudy and cooler days better and is lighter on the roof. FPC (flat plate collector) models such as the V-Guard FPC GL are strong, long-lasting and work very well with hard or borewell water, which is common in many areas around Coimbatore.
Choosing between them depends on your water quality, your roof and how many people use hot water. We have explained this in detail in our FPC vs ETC solar water heater guide. If you are not sure about the size, see our capacity guide for 100, 150, 200, 300 and 500 LPD.

Backup options for continuous rainy days
If your family needs hot water every single morning, plan a backup so the rainy season never catches you out:
Electric backup element: many solar water heaters can be fitted with an electric heating element inside the tank that you switch on only on cloudy days. Ask us whether your model supports it.
Existing electric geyser: if you already have a bathroom geyser, it can stay as the backup and the solar heater does most of the work for the rest of the year.
V-Guard heat pump water heater: a heat pump heats water from the surrounding air, not from sunlight, so it gives hot water in rain, fog and at night. It is a good fit for hill areas like Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri, and for hotels and hostels that need hot water every day.
Monsoon care checklist for your solar water heater
A little care during the rains keeps your system working well for years:
Look for drips or leaks at the pipe joints and the tank after heavy rain.
Make sure the stand is firm and the bolts are tight, especially on exposed terraces with strong wind.
Keep the area around the tubes free of leaves, branches and debris washed onto the roof.
Check that the vent pipe and the cold-water supply line are not blocked.
If a glass tube is cracked or the water is not getting warm even on sunny days, call a technician instead of climbing up yourself.

Is the rainy season a good time to install?
Yes. Installation is done on a dry spell, and our team plans the site visit around the weather. Installing now also means your system is ready for the cool mornings of December and January, when hot water demand is highest. During the free site visit we check your roof space, direction, water quality and family size, and suggest the right model and capacity.
We also help with solar subsidy application support and with arranging PM Surya Ghar bank loans if you are planning rooftop solar power along with your water heater. Frequently asked questions
Will I get hot water from a solar water heater during the rainy season?
Usually yes. On cloudy days the tubes still collect diffused sunlight, so you get warm water. On days of continuous heavy rain the water may stay cool, which is why we suggest an electric backup or a heat pump if you need hot water every day.
Which type works better in cloudy weather, ETC or FPC?
ETC (evacuated tube) models generally perform better in cloudy and cool weather because the vacuum in the tubes reduces heat loss. FPC models are a strong choice for hard or borewell water. We help you choose after checking your site.
Can rain or hail damage the glass tubes?
Normal rain does not harm the tubes; it actually washes off dust. If a tube gets cracked by a falling branch or object, it can be replaced individually. Call us instead of trying to fix it on the roof yourself.
Do you install solar water heaters during the monsoon?
Yes. We schedule the installation on a dry day and handle the site visit, installation and after-sales service across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Pollachi, Karur, Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam, Ooty and Dharapuram.
Is a heat pump better than a solar water heater for the rainy season?
A heat pump does not depend on sunlight, so it gives steady hot water in rain, fog and at night. It suits hill areas like Ooty and commercial users. For most homes in the plains, a solar water heater with a backup is enough.
